The Art of Troubleshooting

By Doc Mechail

Is your computer not acting like you want?

Is it outright defying your orders and malfunctioning? IT is supposed to follow your orders, not its own whims. And as if the inconvenience isn’t annoying enough, the cost of technical help has risen, especially with more and more companies eliminating free tech support calls.

How can you possibly persevere against such obstacles in your path?

Well, many problems turn out to be minor, such as loose cables or a slightly altered start-up or boot file. Granted, boot files and .ini file manipulating is not exactly a light science, it takes knowledge about what various commands and lines do to fix them, so I can understand a cry for help there. But one important thing to look for is basic physical problems.

HINT:

Loose cable connections are one of the most frequent culprits of problems.

Always check the back of your computer to make sure all cables are securely connected, it is best to do this with the system powered off. Also remember to touch the system case BEFORE touching any of the connectors in order to ground off any static you may have picked up, as static can severely damage a computer system.

Sometimes the loose cable may be inside your computer. Vibration, heat or even bumping against the computer can dislodge data or power cables. You may have moved it from one location in your office or home to another and it may have been jostled. Sometimes this will knock a cable off its connector.
